Of course, of the most important announcements of recent years not only for the Tulum Real Estate industry, but also for the entire state of Quintana Roo (which also includes Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Cozumel) is the opening of the bidding for the concession for the new Riviera Maya International Airport in Tulum. This new airport, combined with certain other factors, now poises Tulum move from the new real estate market at the end of the Riviera Maya, to a new, central position in the region's tourism and real estate industries.

As the plans for the new airport begin to materialize into real steps towards construction, a growing number of property opportunities will begin to appear in Tulum MLS listings; when the new airport is actually completed, tourism will take a giant leap in Tulum, bringing even further growth and interest to the real estate market.

However, it is not only the tourism boost in Tulum that will bring new opportunities to Tulum MLS properties; with this change, there will also be a new emphasis on the south of the State of Quintana Roo (Cancun and Playa del Carmen lie to the north of Tulum.) One purpose of the new airport is to open up tourism and real estate opportunities in the areas passing the Sian Ka'an biosphere reserve, namely the Mayan pyramid sites at various points (for tourism) and the Mahahual / Costa Maya area (for tourism and real estate.)

Once the development of the Costo Maya area takes off, Tulum will no longer be the "end of the road," but will now be a kind of local hub, right at the center of the already established tourism destinations to the north, and the up-and-coming ones in the south. Tourists who travel to the Mexican Caribbean and wish to take advantage of a broader range of destinations will tend to choose Tulum as their home base, buying flights to the airport in Tulum, and staying in hotels their to take excursions north or south.

For real estate buyers, Tulum's tourism infrastructure will develop, bringing new roads, health care facilities, activities, restaurants, shopping, and much more to enjoy as a part of day to day life. For investors, their couldn't be a more ideal situation. The promised growth, the definite advancement in the plans for the airport, the new central position and role this will give Tulum mean that an improved property (or even unimproved) could re-sell for excellent return.

And to top all of this, as Tulum's MLS listings will show you, properties here are still relatively cheap, selling for noticeably less than in the established cities to the north...

Paradise, as defined by some dictionaries and religions, is heaven or any environment that is ultimately pleasurable. We can't help you get to heaven; however we can give you some good tips on getting to a place that's almost ultimately pleasurable! It's difficult to imagine that one of the routes to such a place is through central Mexico, a drive that we first made in the late 70´s. What an experience; a nightmare that we'll never forget and surely never repeat! The roads were terrible with chuck holes everywhere, no signs anywhere, and littered with dogs, chickens, and even pigs in every small village. Well, things have really changed, especially during the past ten years.

In 1997, we purchased a newly constructed villa on the mountainside overlooking Banderas Bay and El Centro, the downtown area of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and have made it our permanent residence for ten years. We have driven to Vallarta on numerous occasions, crossing the border at Laredo, El Paso, and Nogales. Although the trips to PV can be made in two days, we've never felt the sense of urgency to drive long days or at night and therefore typically make the journey in two and a half or three days of driving, spending two nights in Mexican hotels. Traveling from Nogales, we like to spend the first night in one of the fine ocean front resort hotels in San Carlos near Guaymas. The second night is spent in one of the fine ocean front resort hotels in Mazatlan. From El Paso, we spend the first night in the Chihuahua area and the second evening in the same resort hotel in Mazatlan as we would if coming from Nogales. Regardless of whether you're coming from Nogales or El Paso, the two day drive to Mazatlan is all on beautiful new super toll roads with speed limits of about 110 km/hour which many Americans treat as 110 miles/hour! The Mexican Federal Police patrol the modern toll roads but don't seem to pay much attention to speed. There are many road assistance call boxes along the toll roads in the event services are required with road assistance people readily available. Huge modern Pemex stations with very nice restaurants are strategically located along these super highways for your convenience or rest. The total toll is roughly $100 but it's definitely worth it because they are so lightly traveled. The third day of driving is somewhat different. The first half of this final leg is from Mazatlan to Tepic and is a fast drive on a modern toll road, however once you leave Tepic, the fun begins! The final 100 miles to Vallarta is a hilly, winding, narrow road through the Sierra Madres and requires a great deal of patience, especially when you get behind a slow moving truck. However, as you come out of the mountains and get your first glance at Banderas Bay, you know that you've about reached Paradise and the drive was worth it. Coming from Laredo is a shorter trip and the first night can be spent in the Saltillo area, the second night in the Guadalajara area, and then into Vallarta by way of Tepic. All but the final 100 miles is on super toll roads, very safe, and easy to drive. Getting to PV by car is nothing like it was ten or twenty years ago.

Although driving to PV is not a problem, flying here is much faster and easier. During the past ten years, the International Airport has quadrupled in size in order to accommodate the many flights that are coming and going all day, everyday. Flight time from Houston is two hours, from Chicago three and a half hours, Phoenix and Los Angeles two and a half hours, San Francisco three hours, etc. Almost everyone working in the new International Airport in PV speaks English and they have become quite efficient in processing and welcoming visitors to Paradise.

During the past year, a new Maritime Terminal has been constructed in PV. Ten years ago, cruise ships arrived in Vallarta twice a week, however, today we often have two or three ships a day at the new Maritime Terminal. Other than being made much larger, there is one other major change regarding cruise ships in Vallarta. Effective in 2008, Vallarta will become a cruise port point of embarkation and disembarkation. The new Maritime Terminal will begin processing tourists as is done in the International Airport thus opening a third mode of transportation to Vallarta. One will be able to cruise from Florida, Texas, California, or even Vancouver, Canada with Vallarta being the destination port.

So, whether you chose to drive, fly, or cruise, Paradise, where the average daily temperature is 73°F with clear skies for the seven month "high season" of November through May, awaits you.

A computer is one of the devices that make work easier but this depends entirely on the maintenance and other precautions that are taken when dealing with it. When computers are not properly handled and maintained, they are likely to frustrate the users because they become slow and do not deliver the intended services effectively. However, there are some few things that one can use to make the PC faster. Some of these tips are costly while others involve some few configurations and customization that can be carried out any time the computer slows down.

To make your computer faster, you should ensure that you defragment from time to time. This makes the computer be in a position to execute its programmes easily without the need to look for those programs from the entire hard disk. Disk defragmentation means that all the files and folders are arranged according to their sizes as well as their types which enable the computer to increase its speed. You can easily do that by clicking the start menu button, click to programs, accessories, click on the system tool command and finally to the deframentation tool. Doing this will surely guarantee the performance of your machine at absolutely no cost. You can also make your computer faster by adding more memory size on it. This method may cost you because you will be prompted to buy some more memories and fix them to your machine so as to increase its speed. In fact, this is the best way to approach if your computer runs slow.

Other methods that can prove to be effective include daily maintenance of it and this includes blowing off the dust as well as checking the memory and other devices such as power supply, upgrading the processors among others. Updating the programs such as the anti-virus programmes will also help to increase the performance of your computer because use of outdated antivirus programmes is not effective to threats and other malicious programmes. A lot of dust from your computer will also slow down its performance because dust causes the processor to overheat and this may cause other serious programmes besides slowing down the computer speed. Use of some programmes such as the glary utilities is used to clean the registry and remove all the junk files and folders that may be present in the registry. To make your PC run faster, ensure that it has enough memory.

2211

In our Registry Cleaners Review, we found that Registry Easy is the Best Registry Cleaner for speeding up your computer.

When fuel costs are so high, people favor flying to driving. If the distance to be traveled is over 500 miles it often makes sense to fly. If the distance is over 1000 miles then it definitely makes sense to fly to save fuel. In fact unless you really need a car once you get there and unless you will be staying for a long time or taking quite a bit of luggage, driving makes little sense. Some of us may be setting our sights on destinations which are not close to large airports, meaning we will need to jump onto a commuter airline to complete the trip, which does raise the cost. Still, it is hard to beat the trip on cost if you are paying $2.35 per gallon.

If you are traveling to a busy large International Airport you are going to save money over driving. If you live in a big city and traveling to another big city, then it is hard to justify the cost of driving. It is not just in the United States that this is true, it also works in Europe where discount airline flights from London to Paris or Madrid make sense. The Euro-Tunnel costs to drive are expensive. Although a ferry is a little less expensive it still cannot compare to the low cost of flying. In the United States we see people traveling to Las Vegas and from just about anywhere except the LA Basin, it makes little sense to drive anymore. Flights from PHX, Sacramento, Denver, Seattle or Portland are well under $100.00 in many cases if you buy them in advance. If you check the cost of flying VS the cost of fuel in you SUV, then you will see how affordable flying really is. Think on this.

Altinkum is a small yet busy resort on the Aegean coast of Turkey. Altinkum lends itself perfectly to both short breaks from daily life, or to year-round living. One of the most recent additions to the resort is the $55 million Altinkum Marina, which took two years to complete and which is now the second largest marina in Turkey.

Aside from the marina, there is the world-famous Apollo Temple and Altinkum's aqua park to attract visitors. Ideally located, Altinkum is comfortably accessible from other, neighbouring resorts, and is only an hour's taxi ride from Bodrum Airport, with a shuttle service taking an extra half an hour

The stress-free, laid back pace of day-to-day life in Altinkum is a major attraction and evokes that sense of true country living. But this region is only as tranquil and serene as you want it to be. Just around the corner is retail heaven as Altinkum plays host to many shopping complexes and malls to make your retail therapy experience easily accessible and reassuringly affordable.

Access to spending money is never a problem in Altinkum as the region is well-stocked with all the major banks and ample ATMs from which to withdraw cash. As well as this, the resort's expatriate community often takes full advantage of the inviting interest rates given to national account holders and it's easy for locals and foreigners alike to open bank accounts, setting up the usual standing orders and direct debit payments for utilities, phone bills and so on.

Some of the finest dining experiences in the world can be had in Altinkum's superb range of restaurants but such gastronomic delights won't only please your palate but your wallet too as eating out in this area is impressively affordable. A good number of eateries in and around Altinkum offer a convenient taxi service, with pick-ups from your accommodation direct to the table!. Should you prefer to make the most of your cozy accommodation, those who wish to dine indoors may benefit from a wide choice of delivery services with sumptuous meals straight to your door, giving you more time to prepare and preen for the resort's thriving nightlife.

Moving in and around Altinkum is not only convenient but reliable and affordable too. Bus fares (on the Turkish mode of transport known as dolmus, which means 'stuffed') start from as little as a single Turkish lira. Altinkum's public transport is often crowded at the height of summer, due to the number of tourists flooding to the area. As a direct result of this, Altinkum car hire has become a blossoming and rather lucrative industry and many local travel agents are offering incredibly competitive prices so it pays to shop around. Hiring a vehicle is simple to do and there's no need to pre-arrange, with plenty of hire cars available from Bodrum, Altinkum's nearest serving airport.

Google and other popular search engines have registered an increasing number of terms such as "villas Altinkum" being submitted as more and more people seek to rent or even buy property in the region. Those considering rental accommodation in Altinkum can expect prices to begin at 200 pounds per week. The cost of buying that place in the sun could start at as little as 17,000 pounds

A plethora of sightseeing and holiday attractions surrounds Altinkum resort and the area around it. Some may like to try their hand - or mouth - at learning the local dialect, whilst others might prefer to become involved in any number of continuing local community projects, which are jointly co-ordinated by British and Turkish organizations. If this doesn't take your fancy, there are always weekly activities in which to participate. There is definitely a lot to keep you busy.

205e

So to recap on the highlights of Altinkum.

* It is an hour transfers from the nearest airport.

* ATM machines are everywhere

* Plenty of restaurants and bars make it perfect for youngsters, elderly couples or families

* Altinkum car hire is very popular to explore the surrounding resorts.

I guarantee that you will enjoy Altinkum just as much as I do. Don't forget your camera. For more information on Turkish Travel, visit my blog today.

People use limousine services for many occasions. It could be for a party, wedding, graduation, or just a reason to have fun. It's important to qualify perspective limo service and not just rummage through the phone book and find the one who had the biggest ad.

Here are some things you want to think about before selecting a limo company:

First, you want to see what their reputation is. Run a search of a particular limousine company online. Most of the major search engines have a review section where people can write their thoughts about a particular company. There is no filtering in the reviews can be either good or bad. There many other review sites where people can post their opinions about services they either were impressed with oral never use again.

Second, call prospective limo company and asked if they have insurance. I know this may seem like an odd question but you want to make sure that whatever company is transporting you and your loved ones is fully insured. A general liability policy of over $1 million is preferred. In addition, I would make certain that they have the proper business license and ask if their drivers have their chauffeurs license. That's required in many states like Oregon.

Third, ask about their rates. A professional limousine companies should be upfront about what they charge and their miscellaneous fees. In these days with the prices of fuel is not uncommon for limo companies to charge a service fee or a fuel surcharge. You will find that many companies charge that will as well. There can also be fees for drivers having to wait over a specified amount of time. Limo companies have to pay their drivers by the hour and even if the drivers are in the car waiting they still have to get paid. While miscellaneous charges are not uncommon when it comes to limousine companies it is however important that they are upfront about them. There should be full disclosure. The typical hourly rate for a professional limousine company in Portland Oregon is $100 an hour. That's for standard limousine and if you want premium limousines the price goes up from there.

When you follow these three steps you should eliminate doing business with less than horrible limo companies. You have to keep in mind that in big cities, including Portland Oregon, they're going to be a few bad apples in the bunch that can really be unpleasant to deal with. Use common sense, do a little bit of background checking on a particular company, and you should be able to weed out the good from the bad.

2274

Finding a dependable, honest, and reasonable limo service Portland OR can be challenging. Doing a little homework and background checking on a potential company goes a long way.

Alan C. Walters, an author and motivational expert, has often been "in the zone." He calls it the Golden Magic Zone.

In his book, The Secrets to Increasing Your Wealth, Power, and Happiness, he describes one of his remarkable experiences.

Once I wanted to purchase an airplane, a turbo-charged Beech Bonanza, that cost $38,000; I had $3,000.

I circled the advertisement in red ink and thought, "How am I going to turn this $3,000 into $38,000?"

An idea flashed to mind: Play Blackjack!

It was a Sunday morning. I got into my car and drove 280 miles to John Ascuga's Nugget in Sparks, Nevada, a suburb of Reno.

I sat down with two other people at a table that had a $400 a hand limit. I cashed my $3,000 for chips and bet $400 on two positions.

I played for twenty minutes and bought cards three times by double downing an ace, two, and received an eight each time.

I hit blackjack twenty-three times in twenty minutes; I had a huge pile of chips. The first time I lost a hand, I quit.

Picking up my chips and taking them to the cashier, I found I had won $58,000; I had $46,000 after taxes.

I purchased the Bonanza for $34,000, cash.

On my first flight, I blew the engine over Aurora, Oregon. Looking down, I saw a small airport. It had no radio, so I landed with great billows of black smoke pouring from the engine. I didn't know where I was, and the airport was surrounded by trees and hedges.

With several taxiways disappearing into the trees, something made me choose a taxiway toward the south end of the field.

As I taxied between those trees, I saw an old, broken-down shed. I stopped the plane in front of the shed, climbed out and walked through the front door. There I saw an elderly man putting away tools.

"Is there anyone at this airport who really understands turbo-Bonanzas?" I asked.

The man smiled. "Well," he drawled. "Up until last week, I was the foreman and head mechanic of Bonanza West, over at Portland Airport."

Amazing! (I was in the right place at the right time).

I had him replace the engine and do a complete overhaul of the plane. It cost $12,400, the exact amount I had left from my winnings. I flew that plane for ten years and never had another problem.

What are the factors that create this unique experience?

Dr. Perry Mitchell, a psychologist and public speaker, has identified some critical elements that can help anyone step into the zone.

Since what you focus on expands, you get into the zone when you naturally capitalize on your strengths and get over your mistakes quickly.

If you enjoy what you do, you will effortlessly create a momentum that can carry you into the zone, a state where you are focused, relaxed, and self-trusting.

People rarely enter the zone because they completely believe in two myths about success.

One is that to do well you have to work hard. The result of this, of course, is that since you want to do well to succeed, you believe that working harder and harder will get you closer and closer to your goal. What it does, however, is increase pressure, anxiety, and fear. Instead of doing better, you actually do worse as you fatigue and tense up.

Another myth is that pain is good. It has been particularly popularized in sports with the slogan, "no pain, no gain." Again, increasing pain results in a state of exhaustion and the cessation of effort toward your goal.

These myths are so ingrained in the collective unconsciousness that most people operate on them without even noticing them. They feel that they are not making progress unless they feel a sense of strain and effort. And they doubt if something can be good for them if it doesn't cause discomfort.

What keeps these two myths operating is what Dr. Mitchell calls the "Critical Advisor." In Freudian terms, this would be the Super-Ego. It is an ego state that is omnipresent and works on you by making you doubt anything and everything, especially your own self-worth. It is your inner map of how you should be and persistently criticizes you for not measuring up. It considers negative motivation to be necessary for your success.

To get into the zone, you have to shut off the Critical Advisor and get into the "Hands Free Zone." This term is based on an analogy. When you are riding a bicycle without holding the handlebars, you're in the "hands free zone."

When you are in the Hands Free Zone you are soaring. When you are in it, you are focused, but in a relaxed way, like a karate expert, who is both alert and relaxed enough to strike quickly at an opponent. However, once you start to notice that you are focused,

the Critical Advisor leaps in and puts you down, thus cutting off the evenly flowing psychic energy that was putting you in the zone.

The Critical Advisor has a contest mentality and a critical mentality. The contest mentality is polarity. An evaluation of whether you are good or bad, performing well or poorly. The critical mentality is the belief that you are not good enough to do it well, not worthy of accomplishment. It constantly looks at results.

Thus, the Critical Advisor operates on a polarity paradigm and a results paradigm. Since its job is to criticize you in the belief that this will steer you in the right direction (negative motivation), it cuts off any flow or zone states. You are so focused on not making a mistake that you manifest mistakes. By trying not to miss the ball flying at you, you fumble and let it slip through your fingers. By trying not to hit the lake as you make your golf swing, you send it straight into it .

The way to avoid "choking" is to turn the Critical Advisor off. You do this by being willing to consider multiple options. And you do this by focusing on the process, not the results.

If there are more than two options, then the polarity of right and wrong lose their grip on you. Similarly, if you're still in process, you can't judge results.

Doing it right is relevant to the Critical Advisor. But to the person in flow, doing it is all that matters. When you are just doing it, not worrying about whether you are good or bad at it, not concerned about results, then you are in the zone.

In the zone, you surge (enter the Hands Free Zone), recover (from the Critical Advisor), and surge again (back in the Hands Free Zone).

In relationship to time, the Critical Advisor seeks to either dominate the past or the future.

In reviewing the past, it stirs the emotion of guilt and regret. In previewing the future, it stirs the emotion of doubt and anxiety.

A person in the zone, focuses on the present, which completely removes all the negative emotions that arise from contemplating the past or the future.

There are two formulas for getting into the zone.

In the first formula, you do the following:

1. Notice what is happening right now.

2. Weigh all your options (also called the magic of the third option).

3. Learn from your experiences.

4. See what is different.

In the second formula, you do the following:

1. You perform a centering ritual. For example, a basketball player may bounce the ball three times before shooting for the net.

2. You perform a mental rehearsal. The basketball player envisions the ball arcing and flying into the center of the hoop.

3. You optimize. Turn up the volume, so to speak. Releasing the ball into the air.

4. Finally, you capitalize on what you did well. Say a loud "yes" with a clenched fist as the ball slides perfectly into the hoop. This reinforces the subconscious.

Getting into the zone is possible. But it is a skill more than just luck. And like any skill, you have to practice to get good at it.

Have a great day!

I was in Seattle recently and noticed that their brand new light rail system had connected up with the SeaTac international airport.

It looks really nice but, hey aren't there supposed to be people on-board? It didn't look like anyone was riding it. Big, beautiful, expensive and it wasn't being used much. I did a quick Internet "Google" search and could only find stories about ridership numbers written last summer. That was when they opened the service and let folks ride for free. Something like 12,000 people a week were riding it. That seems like a lot but the forecast had been that ten or twenty times that amount would hop out of their cars and into the shiny new light rail cars.

Not happening. Of course many people said that. Many objected and said that, "it won't work, too few stops, not convenient to out of downtown commuter, no parking at the stations, another waste of money, etc..." you know the usual rational opposition to government's attempt to spend your money.

So why do they build these monuments over such resounding opposition? If you were running a business and at least half if not more of your potential customers said, I am not going to buy that product, you wouldn't build it. But in our current bureaucracy run government they simply create excuses and build the monuments anyway. They don't seem to catch the clue that if the commuters wanted mass transit they would stuff the buses they have and then demand more. They wouldn't sign on to a plan that requires multiple bus rides to and from train stations when a single bus had been able to take care of them before.

Funny thing about buses they are flexible. I have heard that if no one is riding a bus in one part of town they can simply direct the driver to go pick people up in another area. To bad about those rascally light rail cars, they ride on you guessed it, light rail tracks which tend to be permanent. So what do they do if no one is coming to the train station? They send buses out to pick up people, who would have preferred to stay on the same bus and then get off at the office. Most of the new train riders were already on a bus, so they aren't even getting that many new riders. Most potential new riders are looking at the transfer nightmare and are staying in their car.

If they don't get the riders they can't justify the train. I read one study about light rail in the other western cities, and found that adding just one new rider costs between 80,000 and 200,000 dollars.(1) Seems to be a bit much for one less car on the road.

Once the argument about saving transportation dollars was trashed the new argument became, yes you guessed it; sparing the Earth CO2 gases. The more electric light rail cars and less automobiles the happier the Earth would be. Anyone reading the news lately would see that CO2 isn't the "boogie man" problem that some have argued it was. Just like the Cub Scouts have been telling their parents for years, trees really do dig that CO2 and would like to have us creating some more. Getting beyond the misinformation, what about the argument that light rail will reduce the CO2 emissions. Once an electric train is running, it certainly does emit less CO2 then a car driving next to it.The problem is that the total CO2 emitted during the construction of the light rail system far exceeds what is put out by the cars. It takes a decade of light rail use to save the CO2 emitted by the construction equipment.

So, if the light rail doesn't save commuting money and it doesn't save CO2 until years down the road; why do these city planners continue to force light rail systems into areas that don't want it?

Let me tell you why. It is called the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). This is one more of those mega bureaucracies no one has ever heard about. The FTA is a subset of the Department of Transportation and they enjoy paying money to states and cities who are building light rail systems. There you have it; buses, no joy, light rail...billions of dollars for some heavy construction firms.

I had heard that you can get most anything, if you have enough money. Seattle got a new shiny train to ride to the airport. Now they are just like the folks in Portland and Sacramento and San Jose, etc. Thank you taxpayers in Idaho, New Hampshire and everywhere else. That money doesn't really come from the Federal Transit Administration, it came from me and you and the guy next door.

I am going to Seattle this summer and ride that new train, I bought it and my children bought it and my grandchildren will get to pay for it too. Maybe by then someone will actually be riding it.

Have a great day!

Travel is a fact of life for most consultants. Many spend 45 weeks on the road every year, and some say they wouldn't want it any other way.

We know one married couple where both are traveling consultants. They often joke that they should write a book called "Marriage on Three Days a Week" because they only see each other from Thursday night to Sunday night most weeks. Of course, they take great vacations with all the frequent flier miles and hotel points, and neither one is left at home to manage the household while the other dines in restaurants every night and comes home expecting all the chores to be done.

Like many others, they have learned how to be comfortable on the road so that their travel schedules are a source of new experiences and great stories instead of a hardship. If you learn how to be comfortable in your environment, you'll do better work and last longer in this demanding field.

There are two types of consulting roles, from a travel schedule perspective. One type of consultant is the real Road Warrior who is in a different city each week, often visiting two or three different clients and staying only a couple of days each place. The other type travels to the same destination every week to work on a long-term engagement over several months. Which type of travel schedule you end up with depends as much on your personality as on your skill set.

No matter which type of travel schedule you have, there are some seemingly small things you can do to make yourself significantly more comfortable on the road.

Enroll in every frequent flier and hotel points program you can. The biggest perks in business travel come when you get a free family vacation later. All those trips to Pittsburgh might buy you a trip to Honolulu or Prague or wherever your heart leads you.

Whenever possible, use the same airline and hotel chain for every city. This helps you rack up the points faster, and it also establishes a level of comfort and familiarity for you from the moment you arrive in the city. Not every Marriott is exactly like every other Marriott, but there are enough similarities between them that you will begin to feel at home quickly.

Packing for Travel

Develop a routine for packing. Make a checklist that includes everything that you know you'll need for any trip, including items like toothbrush and cell-phone charger. Go over the checklist every single time you pack a suitcase.

If you don't follow this advice, you will eventually end up spending $200 on a "charge everything" device and using a hotel toothbrush that will rip your gums out.

Always assume you will have to carry your luggage yourself. If you aren't sure you will need it, don't take it. You can always buy one there. (Don't accept engagements in locations that don't have stores.)

Pack something comfortable to wear in your hotel room and clothes you can wear to work out.

Plan to sleep in something you don't mind being seen wearing in public. In the event of a fire, hotels will evacuate two floors above and two floors below, even if it's just a small fire in a trash basket. That's what that loudspeaker above the bed is for.

All luggage looks alike. Make your bag easy to spot on the carousel and less likely to be stolen with a few strategically placed strips of duct tape or a big pink bow.

The military knows that rolled clothing does not wrinkle. Don't fold it, roll it. Turn jackets inside out, fold the collar up and press one shoulder inside the other.

Think about what you pack from the perspective of Customs and Airport Security. For example, many airlines will not allow you to carry steel-tipped darts in your carry-on luggage. (Yes, one of us learned this the hard way. Not the one you think.) Carry all medication in the original packages, particularly prescription medication.

Purchase two of everything you use daily, like cosmetics, razors, toothbrush, etc. Leave one set at home. Pack toiletries once and leave them packed. This way, you don't have to worry that you forgot something essential and will not notice until the middle of the night in a strange hotel room. When you run out of something on the road, replace it. (This is easier if you use common brands that are sold nationally.)

After only a few weeks of travel, you'll know exactly what you need to pack and what you don't.

Hotel Living

If you are traveling to the same city every week, pick a hotel that you are comfortable in and make friends with the people at the front desk and in Housekeeping. If you can commit to a certain number of weeks, they might even give you a break on the room rate, which is also good for your customer.

Once you've tried two or three different rooms in different parts of the hotel, you'll begin to identify specific things you like or dislike. Within a few weeks, you'll probably have a favorite room. Don't be afraid to ask for it every week. Staying in the same room every week can increase your sense of comfort and it's easier to remember what room you are in. Every one of us has been frustrated at least once by trying to open a hotel room door, only to realize that the key doesn't work because this is the room we were in last week, and we have no idea what room we have been assigned this week.

If you followed our instructions for packing and bought duplicates of all your toiletries and travel needs, you can check a suitcase with the bellman over the weekend instead of carrying it home with you. Leave your laundry with a dry cleaner over the weekend and come back on Monday to a fresh wardrobe without carrying a bag with you to the airport. That's freedom!

Make friends with the people who have control of the food. If you are eating all your meals off the Room Service menu, you will soon get bored with the choices. Encourage the person who answers the Room Service line to give you suggestions.

When Christine was working in one city where it wasn't considered safe to leave the hotel and wander around at night, she called the Room Service number one night and said, in the most pitiful voice she could muster, "I'm hungry and nothing on the menu looks good tonight. Help me!"

The Room Service voice laughed and said, "Miss Lambden, don't you worry. After all these months, I know what you like. Let me surprise you."

In addition to the best steak and the freshest salad ever served by Room Service, the waiter brought a glass of red wine and said, "The chef said to tell you that he knows you don't like red wine, but this is special. Try it with the steak. Alternate one bite of steak with one sip of wine."

She still talks about that steak. After that night, she never had to look at the Room Service menu again. When she called, she would say, "Maybe a fish tonight?" or "I'm in the mood for something chocolate."

Remember, if you are tired of the hotel menu, just imagine how the chef feels.

Since you can't eat all the time, here are some other ways to fill an evening in a hotel room:

Call your mother.

Read.

Go to a movie.

College libraries are often open late. Learn something.

Work out. Remember the Freshman Fifteen in college? The life of a consultant includes too many meals in restaurants and too few long walks in the park.

If you exercise at home, try to exercise the same way when you are traveling. Find out if it's safe to walk/run outside near the hotel. This is also a great way to find the neighborhood restaurants and pubs that the travel books don't know about.

If you exercise in a gym at home, stay in a hotel with a gym and use it. If there is no gym available in the hotel, remember that many national chains have memberships that allow you to work out in any city. Like national hotel and restaurant chains, gyms are a great way to find familiar surroundings in an unfamiliar place.

Exploring new cities is a great way to get exercise and enjoy your time on the road. See the sights. Shop. Ask the people at the hotel and at work what you should be sure to see while you are in town.

We know one consultant who managed, in one year, to see Niagara Falls (working in Buffalo), the Arch in St. Louis, the Napa Valley wine country, six shows on Broadway, and Fort Lauderdale during Spring Break.

Did you know that Kansas City is the City of Fountains? In the winter, the city slowly freezes some of the fountains so you see frozen ice where water flows in the summer. Just beautiful.

Did you know that you can visit the Budweiser Clydesdales at Grant's Farm in St. Louis? If you think they are fun to watch on Super Bowl commercials, just imagine how magnificent they are up close.

These opportunities may not present themselves again. Don't spend every evening in your hotel room.

Every city has something unique to offer and the people who live there will be happy to help you discover what is wonderful about their hometown.

Single Life on the Road

The constant-travel lifestyle is often more appealing to single people who do not have a family at home waiting for them each week. For these consultants, the only challenge is finding a way to maintain a home when you aren't there during the week.

Here are some tips:

Ask a friend or neighbor to pick up your mail once or twice during the week.

Install automatic light timers in your house. Install motion sensor lights outside. This makes it look like someone is home and protects your stuff. (It also makes bats and possums find another yard to live in, but that might just be an Austin thing.)

Hide valuables. Burglars know all about looking in the freezer for your jewelry, but would they think to look in that bag of potting soil in the garage? Hint: Tell someone you trust where you hid them...you'll remember all the great spots you considered, and you'll forget the one you picked.

Splurge a little with all that money you are making as a consultant and hire a maid service to come in and clean your house while you are gone. If you have a lawn, hire a yard service, too. The last thing you are going to feel like doing when you finally get home is housework, and you'll be happier in this job if you don't feel that you are neglecting chores.

If possible, have a trusted house-sitter stay in your house. Then you won't have to worry at all.

In addition to maintaining your house, a single person on the road has to maintain a social life. When you are out of town all week, it's easy to find yourself excluded from your friends' conversations about plans for the weekend. You have to work harder to maintain those friendships at home, especially if you are also forming new friendships in the city where you are working.

It's not totally unheard of for consultants assigned to the same client week after week to form friendships, or even romantic attachments, in the city where they work. Having bonds with people all over the country can be a huge advantage professionally because your network is expanded to include all of their colleagues, as well.

Don't date someone in the client company. This can get messy. (Yeah, we know. Your situation is different. You'll handle it like grownups. We'd like to believe this, but in our experience it rarely works out that way. Even so, this is still good advice for everyone else.)

Married With Children

Life on the road is harder for those who have a family at home. You miss them and you feel guilty about leaving them behind, and even more guilty when you're having fun without them.

The same tourist attractions that enliven a single person's travel can make you miss your family even more. You find yourself thinking, "The kids would love this," or "Niagara Falls by myself? I don't think so!"

Here are some tips for making travel easier when you miss your family:

Write long letters saying all the stuff you would have said if you were at home. Buy a fax machine for the house so you can send them before you go to bed and the family can read them with breakfast. (We know. Email works just as well. Except it doesn't. Handwritten letters mean more. They just do.)

Give the hotel's fax number to your family or set up a personal e-fax number. Encourage letters from home. Also drawings and report cards and anything else that will make you feel closer. Almost all children could benefit from the occasional writing exercise, and most of them already know how to operate a computer.

Buy a small digital camera or use your cell phone to take pictures and make a "Day in the Life" slide show for the kids. Take pictures of your day from the time you wake up to the time you prepare for bed - pictures of your hotel room, your breakfast plate, your cubicle and co-workers, the bookstore you stop at after work, the restaurants you like - everything! (Trust us, they'll love it.)

Driving in Strange (translation: "New To You") Places

Weather conditions and driver courtesy rules vary from city to city. In some cities, driving is a brutal competition, and it's considered rude or suicidal to slow down for a yellow light. Someone will honk at you or run into you. In others, you'll get dirty looks if you don't yield and let a waiting car merge in front of you. On most country roads, failure to wave at passing drivers marks you as an outsider.

No matter where you are, these tips will help lessen the impact of driving during your travels:

Get a map when you arrive. If you know where you are going, you are much less likely to end up in the wrong place.

If you rear-end a car on the freeway, your first move should be to hang up the phone. Better yet, go hands-free when you are driving. Best of all, hang up and drive.

Rent your car from the same agency every week and be extra nice. Usually, the same agents are on duty every Monday morning, so eventually they'll know you and may offer you the cool convertible or the Jag for a week at no extra charge.

Not every state or city has a "right on red" law. Check with the car rental agency or look for a "No right on red" sign before you assume it's legal in any intersection where you are.

If you are stopped for speeding, running a red light, driving the wrong way, or, worst of all, hitting something, be very polite to everyone involved. Of course, this is true when you aren't traveling, too, but you have a better chance of making your meeting or flight if you deal with the situation nicely.

In New York or Boston (or London or Beijing), take a cab or public transportation. Some warnings say "Don't try this at home." With regard to driving in these places, the rule is "Don't try this on the road." In other words, ask someone at your destination or consult a travel guide to find out whether it's advisable to drive yourself around.

If you are facing your first winter in a snowy climate, ask someone to teach you how to drive in icy conditions before the first blizzard. You may feel foolish, and they will definitely laugh at you, but the first time you feel your car start to slide, you'll be glad you did.

For us, just saying "I'm from Texas" is often enough to have our clients offer free driving lessons, icy conditions or not.

Air Travel Tips

Since 9/11, keeping track of the rules for air travel and getting through Security checkpoints has become more of a challenge, but the airlines have made a sincere effort to help.

Every airline and airport website has information about security requirements and how much time will be required to get to your gate. Experienced travelers quickly learn to avoid the busiest times of the day and week. In fact, we don't know a single traveling consulting who would consider flying on the day before Thanksgiving under any circumstances.

Airport websites will also give you information about other amenities that are available in the terminals. For instance, did you know that the Hong Kong airport has showers and rooms where you can take a nap? After a long flight across the Pacific ocean, a shower is a wonderful way to spend your three-hour layover between connecting flights.

The airport in Portland, Oregon, has a great mall. You can get all your Christmas shopping done between flights and have the items you bought shipped home. Oh, and did we mention that Oregon doesn't have sales tax?

The San Francisco airport has twenty different museum galleries that rotate art, culture and science exhibitions on a regular schedule. At SFO, you can't avoid being entertained and educated while you travel.

Here are some other tips for making air travel easier:

When you make your reservations, ask for a seat near the front of the plane. Airlines assign seats back-to-front and families traveling with children tend to plan further ahead than business travelers, so the shrieking three year-olds are usually in the back of the plane.

Always request the Exit Row. Children aren't permitted, and you get more legroom.

Wear earplugs or invest in some good noise-canceling headphones if you plan to sleep. People talk louder on airplanes.

Planes have only 3% humidity, so you get dehydrated quickly. Carry a bottle of water on board. (This will also keep your feet from swelling.) To keep costs and carryon weight low, carry an empty bottle and ask the flight attendant to fill it for you. On international flights, there is usually a water fountain available for passengers to serve themselves.

When they say, "Limit two carry-on bags," assume they really mean it and be prepared to check everything but your purse, briefcase and laptop. A good alternative if you are in a hurry is to "gate check" your bags. Especially with smaller commuter flights, this means you get your bags immediately when you get off the plane with no stop at baggage claim.

Pay attention to the safety speech every once in a while. Like washing your car to make it rain, it's just good karma. We've asked, and yes, most flight attendants feel just as silly giving the speech as you do listening to it, but the fact that no one is listening just makes their job harder.

To prevent a stiff neck from sleeping on a plane, ask the flight attendant for a blanket, roll it up and wrap it around your neck before you fall asleep. Your head won't roll from side-to-side, you won't snore and you won't look nearly as ridiculous as those people drooling on their neighbor's shoulder. They make C-shaped pillows that do this, but that's just one more thing to carry with you. We prefer to travel light.

While you are traveling, do everything you can to make your life easier. When you are enjoying yourself, you are better prepared to perform at work, and you'll be more successful.

Cubicles and conference rooms are the same everywhere. The work won't change, but taking the time to make friends with the people around you, at work and at the hotel, will make all the difference in the world to how well you do it.
